What Is a Retaining Wall, and How Does It Work?
A retaining wall is a structure built to hold soil in place and keep it from moving, most often at the base of a slope or wherever the ground changes elevation. It resists the lateral pressure of the soil behind it, converting an unstable grade into a stable one and creating flat, usable ground where there was none.
Soil does not press straight down on a wall. It pushes sideways, and saturated soil pushes considerably harder, which is why water is the variable that decides whether a wall lasts. A wall that holds back four feet of earth is also holding back every inch of rain that lands on the slope above it. That is the difference between a wall that is engineered and a wall that is stacked, and it is almost entirely invisible once the job is finished.
A wall can serve two purposes at once. Alongside a patio or pool, the same structure that holds back a grade can also become bench seating, a planter edge, or a privacy element.
7 Signs Your Yard Needs a Retaining Wall
A single puddle after a major storm is not a structural problem. A pattern is. Watch for these.
1. Soil moves downhill every time it rains
Mulch migrating onto the walkway, bare patches where grass will not regrow, small gullies forming on a slope, or tree roots that are more exposed each year all point to active soil loss. Reseeding and re-mulching hide the symptom for a season without slowing the movement.
2. Water stands in the same spot for days
Chronic wet zones at the base of a hill mean runoff is arriving faster than the ground can absorb it. A terraced wall lets water be managed in stages instead of racing down a single uninterrupted grade.
3. Part of your yard is unusable
If a section of the property is too steep to mow safely, too sloped for a table and chairs, or simply written off as “the hill,” the functional size of the lot is smaller than the deed says. Grading and one or more walls turn that slope into level terraces you can actually put a patio, a play area, or a garden on.
4. Hardscape edges are shifting, sinking, or cracking
Patio pavers dropping along one edge, a walkway pulling apart, or cracks appearing in a driveway near a slope usually mean the soil underneath is moving. The hardscape is reporting a grading problem, not a paving problem.
5. Fences lean and steps pull apart
Fence posts tilting in one consistent direction and steps separating from a landing are classic signs of lateral soil pressure. Both tend to worsen through Maryland’s freeze-thaw cycles, when moisture in the soil expands and contracts repeatedly through the winter.
6. Soil or water collects against the foundation
Eroding soil flowing toward the uphill side of the house, or soil washing away from the downhill side, puts pressure and moisture where you want neither. A retaining wall placed correctly intercepts that movement before it reaches the foundation.
7. An existing wall is already failing
Older walls give plenty of warning before they come apart. Look for a face that bulges outward at mid-height, a top course tipping forward, courses separating or stair-stepping apart, timbers that have gone soft, or mineral staining and constant seepage through the face. These almost always trace back to an undersized base or missing drainage rather than to the blocks themselves, which is why patching the face rarely holds.

How Lazo Outdoors Builds a Retaining Wall
Two walls can use identical block and look identical on the day they are finished, then diverge completely over the next ten years. What separates them is everything below and behind the face. Here is the sequence Lazo follows on every wall.
- Excavate to proper depth: The wall starts below grade, not on it. We dig down to reach undisturbed, load-bearing soil and cut the trench wide enough to accommodate the base and the drainage behind the wall.
- Build a compacted gravel base: A base of clean gravel goes in below grade and gets compacted in lifts. This is the single most common failure point in walls built by others, because a base laid on topsoil or left uncompacted settles unevenly and takes the courses above it out of alignment.
- Install geogrid reinforcement on taller and load-bearing walls: Geogrid is a structural mesh laid between courses and extended back into the soil behind the wall, tying the wall and the hillside together so they resist movement as one mass. On a taller wall, or any wall supporting a driveway, patio, or structure above it, this is what keeps the face from bulging outward over time.
- Fill every block core with clean stone: Filling the cores adds mass to the wall and gives water a path straight down through the structure instead of a place to collect. Skipping this step is fast and invisible, and it is why some walls hold water they were never meant to hold.
- Backfill for drainage with perforated pipe: Clean stone backfill behind the wall, with a perforated drain pipe at the base, gives water a route out rather than letting it build hydrostatic pressure against the back of the face. In a freeze-thaw climate, this is the difference between a wall that lasts and a wall that gets pushed apart from behind.
- Cap the wall and restore the grade: Caps lock the top course down and finish the wall, then topsoil or sod covers the gravel between the wall and the surrounding landscape so the finished work sits naturally in the yard.

What Maryland Homeowners Should Know Before Building
Permits. Most Maryland counties require permits for retaining walls above four feet, and requirements vary by jurisdiction, so Baltimore County rules differ from Harford, Carroll, Howard, or Anne Arundel County. Engineering. Retaining walls hold back real weight, and stability is a structural question before it is a landscaping one. Sequencing. If a pool, patio, or outdoor kitchen is also in the plan, the wall should be designed at the same time as the rest of it.
